The overnight stay in Brugge was intended mainly as a stopover between Paris and Amsterdam and yet it turned out to be one of our favorite small towns. It's very low-keyed, and after London and Paris, that was a relief. It's pristine, charming with its canals and locks and picturesque architecture.
The owner of the apartment was very helpful with the "don't buy your chocolate at these places" (anyplace where there is lots of product, means it's not fresh nor has the finest ingredients). "Don't eat anyplace where there are lots of tourists". We 'sort of' adhered to his admonitions, but even when we didn't, everyone was pleased with their meals and chocolates.
Jolly wanted to "jump in the water" wherever there was water and we were near water virtually every place we stayed.
As we headed to Amsterdam we were given final warning from the apartment owner; beware the bicyclist in Amsterdam. He appeared to be in his mid-thirties and said he'd just recently gone to Amsterdam for the first time in his life. It's about a 3 hour drive.
