“ Take only memories, leave only footprints.” – Chief Seattle.

I'm an American by birth, Californian by choice and citizen by heart of Tuscany.

My home in Sacramento and my 'second home' in Montepulciano are world's apart, but both have my affection.  I will be posting from both locations.

For 15 years I dreamed of renting a villa in Tuscany and hosting family and friends in a month-long house party.  As the years flew by it became clear that if my dream was to come to fruition, I would need to start making plans.

Finally in 2014, I starting researching where in Tuscany I'd like to spend time.  I read memoirs, novels, and travel blogs and found myself drawn to a small hilltop village in southern Tuscany, Montepulciano.

It had also become clear that my family and friends didn't necessarily get along all that well, and while a house full of people might have been fun 20 years before, at 70 it just sounded like work for me.  So the dream was adjusted to 3 months in an apartment, in a easy to get around small village, where I could host friends singly, or in smaller, congenial groups.

In 2015, friend Jude and I went on a scouting trip to Montepulciano.  As soon as I stepped out of our Airbnb host, Giorgio's car in the village, the hair stood up on my arms and I KNEW that this was the right place for me to look for an apartment for 2016.

In my online research, I'd seen an apartment I liked but wanted to check it out.  After all, things are not always as they seem online. I had an appointment with Maria, one of the owners of Apartment Politian, to see the two-bedroom, Green Tea Apartment.  It was love at first sight.

A couple of weeks after returning home to Sacramento, I contacted Giacomo, brother of Maria, and contracted for the apartment for April 12-July 12.

The 3 months spent there was way too brief.  Friends came and brought friends.  family came,  and they fell in love, too.  My daughter, Jennifer returned to California, then came back with her son. I was smitten and soon after I returned home in July 2016, I began to contemplate how soon I could return.  January 2017...that's when I can return and continue my love affair with Montepulciano and Southern Tuscany.
